Local Roots

Little-known Port St. Lucie history.

Before the master-planned communities, the spring-training crowds, and the I-95 exits, this was open land between Fort Pierce and Stuart. A few facts about how a 40,000-acre real estate gamble turned into Florida's 7th-largest city.

1843

A river village came first

Before Port St. Lucie existed, the small fishing settlement of St. Lucie Village sat along the Indian River. Founded around 1843, it's still a separate town today, surrounded by but never absorbed into the city that grew up around it.

$10 down, $10 a month

The Mackle brothers' General Development Corporation bought 40,000 acres along the North Fork of the St. Lucie River. They platted 80,000 lots and sold them nationwide on installment plans, drawing thousands of northeastern retirees south.

1961

A city born in one day

By February 1961, only 250 homes had been built. On April 27, Florida Governor Farris Bryant signed House Bill 953, incorporating 70 square miles of GDC land as the City of Port St. Lucie. River Park, the older settlement nearby, declined to join.

1988

The Mets came to town

The New York Mets opened spring training at Thomas J. White Stadium (now Clover Park) in March 1988, ending 26 years in St. Petersburg. The Single-A St. Lucie Mets won the Florida State League championship in their first season and have been here ever since.

Elkcam

Mackle spelled backwards

Drive through older sections of Port St. Lucie and you'll cross Elkcam Boulevard. The name is "Mackle" spelled backwards, a quiet tribute the brothers placed in every Florida community they built. Look for it in Port Charlotte and Port Malabar too.

7th

Florida's 7th-largest city

Port St. Lucie had around 300 residents in 1970, 15,000 in 1980, and 55,000 by 1990. Today it's home to roughly 232,000 people and ranks as Florida's 7th-largest city, with the metro area pushing past 530,000.

Working With Jamie

What It's Actually Like to Work With Me

Most of my Port St Lucie clients are relocating from out of state and have never bought in a gated golf or 55+ community before. The first conversation is rarely about a specific house. It is about timing, lifestyle, golf vs. tennis vs. pickleball, and whether new construction or resale gets you what you want faster.

From there, the process is built around your calendar, not mine. I shoot straight on price, point out what I would walk away from, and protect your downside the same way I protect my own family's. The relationship does not end at closing.
